When I knew it was time to make self care a part of my life, I did the usual. I searched “self care,” “self care routines,” etc, etc on Pinterest. I signed up for the workbooks, guides, cheat sheets, and e-books. I obsessively pinned away “50 self care activity” lists and “10 self care activities in 10 minutes” articles.
But after all the downloads landed in my inbox, I read the self care blog posts, and quickly glanced over the massive lists of self care activities, you know what happened?
I never looked at them again.
They lived in my downloads folder for all eternity. And I never went out of my way to make it happen. I forgot everything and kept living my life, feeling drained, and needing to recharge.
Then, something shifted.
I cracked the code. I finally realized that a true self care routine defies checklists and suggestion boxes. And I didn’t have to do what everyone else was promoting just because it’s written on a pretty pin.
If I wanted to make a lasting routine, I needed a system in place. I needed a system based on activities that are efficient, effective, and completely integratabtle into my daily routine. Time to toss the checklists and cheat sheets and build something REAL.
And you know what? I did it! I made it work. I finally learned how to prioritize myself and take care of me the way I take care of others without draining my college student checking account or spending hours “on me.” I found a way to find little bits of daily peace to foster mental and emotional homeostasis.
